Do you know the difference between criminal matters (that Benny handles) and civil matters (that Ric handles)?
Criminal matters involve issues between the government and people where the government has accused someone of breaking a law.
These matters range from a speeding ticket to a very serious crime such as murder.
Whatever the charge, the state is accusing someone of breaking a law, and the state wants that person punished for breaking that law (punishment which will almost always be court costs which are now significant, and which could be a fine and/or jail, loss of a privilege such as a driver’s license or the right to possess a firearm).
Often, and this is important, the punishment for breaking a law is not only the punishment required by the state, but punishment by others (such as insurance increasing, or the criminal matter being used as evidence against you in a separate lawsuit, or the criminal matter being used as evidence that you are no longer trustworthy). Serious stuff that should not be ignored.
Civil matters involve issues between people, such as where somebody is trying to get something from someone else.
These matters include where a wife is seeking divorce or alimony or property settlement from the husband, or where a father is seeking child custody from the mother, or where an injured person is seeking compensation from the person who caused the injury, or where a person is trying to force someone else to do what their contract required.
